Blog 411

This blog was created for our friends and family who don't get to see us -- well, Jonathan and Elise, really -- as often as they'd like. I'm trying to keep you all updated on their milestones and their day-to-day activities. I also hope this will serve as sort of a journal for them as well, something for them to read when they are older that chronologues their lives and adventures. When I can, I'll post pictures and maybe even videos to help bridge the distance.

This blog is Part 2 of the Life of the Hardwicks. This edition will focus on our new lives in Atlanta, GA, that began in July 2013.

E: Mom, please don't kiss me on the lips.
M: Oh, honey, why not?

Jonathan went to the Fox Theater to see The Nutcracker with his class. Despite some logistic idiocracies, he reported back that he "really loved the show" (never get him to call it a ballet b/c that's for girls -- hmmm!). I think it's so cool that he liked it regardless.

2014_12_10 Wednesday

Jonathan slept from about 5pm last night until about 8am today! insane. And, he stayed home today to recover from strep. We did a tiny bit of TV this morning, but then it was back up to bed and entertaining himself (books, legos, ??). I gave him the Barf Bell, which ended up being more like a maid service, so I may need to rethink that. By this evening, he seems completely better again, thankfully.

2014_12_09 Tuesday

Jonathan's been feeling off for the past few days; he says that his tummy hurts and that his throat hurts when he talks. (I know a very easy solution for the latter.) This morning as we were rushing around to catch the bus, he turned to me and said: "Mom, I don't feel good. I really think I might have ebola." We talked a little about how safe we are (and that people with ebola actually come here to get better; whew, did that come in handy!!), but I ran out of time. So, I alerted the school nurse and his teacher to be considerate of that fear. ;o) Well, he got sent home around 1pm for a fever, and we stopped by CVS to rule out strep, but the nurse ruled in strep. Jonathan has to stay home for 24hrs, so he'll miss the last day of his science club; he's pretty bummed about that.

And, a few days ago, Elise had a doozy. "You know, when boys get their fingers painted, it's called a manicure." I couldn't resist asking what it's called when girls do: "a ladycure, of course."

Elise had a complete, satanic episode this morning. I asked her to get dressed; she refused. I told her that I would pick an outfit or she could; she refused. Then, I stuffed her into jeans and a sweater; she did not really appreciate that. Then, I had to rush to get dressed myself b/c I had a conference to attend this morning. When I went back to her room, she was hiding in the closet, naked. OOOOH, was I furious. I jammed her back into the clothes that I chose (she kept yelling that she didn't like those), and we proceeded to breakfast. How do you like those consequences?! I explained that I hope that tomorrow she gets up and selects what she'd like to wear so that we don't repeat this nonsense. She was fine afterward. When I dropped her off at school, she said that she was only going to be respectful of her teacher and babysitter. Hopefully by the time she gets home, she will have reset herself.

From Elise's teacher: Today we talked about poinsettias and made one. We heard a story of where the plant came from in Mexico. We also made stockings. I read the book How My Parents learned to Eat. I had a pair of chopsticks and we practiced picking up an erase with them! They had Spanish today. We practicing writing Ll in our journals as well as numbers 1-10. We made patterns with buttons and pattern cards.
Tell me something you learned about poinsettias today:

2014_11_11 Tuesday

11/11 is quite a day: Danielle's b'day,Veteran's Day, St Martin's Tag all bundled into one short day. I think I missed my office memo that we had the day off; I can't be sure, but it doesn't really matter since the kids are in school anyway. And, it's remarkable how much more productive I am when I know no one else is around to bug.

I spent too long last night online trying to figure out how to make a couple of lanterns for today without leaving the house (car is getting some work done) and came up with nothing, at least nothing for that project. That doesn't bode well since Auntie S celebrated last night, surely in a big way. Jonathan's teacher is in/out ill so I didn't bother to try to come in this year for a St Martin's lesson; besides, a good number were in his class last year anyway. I did mention it to E's teacher, and I think they discussed in class today. I made some dough this afternoon so that we could all bake pretzels together tonight. Naturally, the evening routine didn't got smoothly (single parenting stinks!), but we did manage to make 3 pretzels.
We didn't get to making Laterne, but that's a-ok. J finished his homework from yesterday and today (include 2-digit subtraction with carrying/re-grouping), but not before we had a very serious talk that Mom and Dad will never hate him, as he apparently suspects we might (can't tell if this is a delay tactic or if something else is going on since there were real tears). Everyone ate dinner; E even took a bath while J read to us. oye. where's my wine?!

oh, did I mention that I've caught up on all the photos I've been meaning to add to this? check, check, and check!

From Elise's teacher: What wonderful and silly hats everyone wore today! :)  Today we talked about the layers inside the earth. We learned the words crust, mantle, inner core, outer core. We made earth layers and labelled them. I read parts from he book Earth's Mantle and Core. We talked more about geologists. We made the letter Jj with playdoh. We completed games from a fun Science Folder kit. Elise shared with the class how her family will celebrate St. Martin's day from Germany. They had Spanish today.

How do we show we are thankful for the earth and other things in our lives?
Elise- do not pull leaves off of a tree because it will die.

Our letter of the week is Jj.
They had Mandarin today.
What is one fact you learned about Geology today?

We worked on blending CVC words together. We worked on flash cards with rhyming words. No German today. Everyone should have their pictures at home! They came in yesterday! Turned out great!

What is a food you would like to make at home by combining ingredients?

2014_11_05 Wednesday

Elise over breakfast this AM: "The worst thing about my brother is that he doesn't like avocados."

I guess that's pretty reasonable of her. If that's the worst thing, I'll take it.

2014_11_04 Tuesday

Today is Election Day, so Elise's school is closed as a polling station. She got to sleep in today, which was nice for her (she's fighting a cold), although she asked a few times if she was late for school and when school was going to start today. I love the enthusiasm.

Jonathan's bus was messed up this AM, so I dumped him in a friend's car and hoped for the best. Apparently, he was the only one who didn't cry at drop off (whaaat?!?). gesh. can't wait to hear that story this afternoon.

Over breakfast, Elise and I sang "Oh My Darling Clementine." When I asked her to sing it back to me, she sang: "Oh my darling, Oh my darling, Oh my darling peach." soooo close!

2014_11_03 Monday

From Elise's teacher: Happy Monday, Hope everyone had a great Halloween. This month will be about science. This week we are talking about chemistry and the letter Ii. We discussed what chemistry is today. We discussed that chemists work in labs to mix certain chemicals together to make medicines, foods, cleaning supplies. We made a chemical reaction with pink watercolor, vinegar and baking soda today. They all said it made cool bubbles and looked like soda. We free painted what the small explosion looked like to us. We discussed acids and bases. I went over the number range with them. They had Mandarin today.

What does chemistry mean to you?
Elise- Chemistry is, to me, when you can make and erupt volcanoes.

Both kids had special events at school to take back their Halloween candy. Jonathan had a Switch Witch, and Elise had Operation Gratitude for US soldier overseas. neat-o.

I also had a meeting with the VPrincipal today about the upcoming transition in Jonathan's class. I'm really excited about having a male long-term substitute for him. I think/hope it will do him a world of good.

2014_10_31 Friday

Cat-erina
From Elise's teacher: Good afternoon and Happy Halloween! Wow what a fun-filled day we had! We had a free play and calendar time in the morning. Then we talked about our costumes and took some awesome pictures! We made a sign for the parade! We then decorated our pumpkins. And we made a ghost treat to take home. We also made a balloon ghost. Hopefully it makes it home! We listened to which witch is which? and 12 days of Halloween. I read Halloween Hoots and Howls and The Best Halloween Hunt Ever.  We enjoyed some time outside. Then we had our parade! :)
It was great seeing everyone!! Thanks to all who helped out!! Show and tell is next Wednesday- bring in a cool rock or fossil to share!

What fun we had roaming around our neighborhood with 40 of our closest friends. The street behind us gets blocked off, and families are everywhere.  Dave was a 70s funky guy; Elise was Cat-erina with a tail, paws, and ears; Jonathan was a soldier/military dude; and I was Cersie Lanister (from Game of Thrones). On Saturday, the kids divided up their candy for themselves and to give away. whew. My belly can't take it anymore!

Dave had two work buddies from Vietnam over for dinner earlier this week, and they all carved up pumpkins (such an American tradition!). They were pretty funny to watch as they used spoons to dig out the guts and carve fancy designs with special tools.

2014_10_27 Monday

I'm back from a whirlwind, amazing trip to Germany. Will be catching up today and tomorrow. Stand by for updates and photos!

From Elise's teacher: Hello, We will talk about Halloween this week. We discussed how we celebrate Halloween and how other countries around the world celebrate it. Today we discussed names of bones such as femur, tibia, fibula,  cranium. We made a skeleton and included all the bones we learned about. They had Japanese today. Some matched uppercase letters to their lowercase letters using clothespins. We completed a Halloween number book. We also completed a My Color Book. We danced to Dem Bones or Skeleton Dance.

How do we celebrate Halloween? Or you can tell me how other people around the world celebrate Halloween?

2014_10_25 Saturday

Today is Dave's 40th birthday celebration since I was in German for the actual day (Tuesday). I organized a full day of festivities for him and his boys. The kids and I took him to Cracker Barrel for breakfast; I had to hold back my vomit (I hate that place). He loved it, despite having to drive 25 minutes out of town, shocking, to find one.
At 11:30, I had a party bus pick up the guys at the house and deliver them to paintball.
(Then, Jonathan had a birthday party to attend.) Ahh, a bit of girl time. It was scheduled to return them at 6, but somehow the poor guys were so tired that they were home by 5. Somehow I got un-invited to dinner out; I guess the memo didn't get passed to the ladies to meet up, so it ended up being just the guys...better that way, me thinks. Dave was home 'relatively' early, but then again, they started a lot earlier than usual! good times.

We all played a pumpkin/starry night roll the dice math game. They had German. Most know their German color words!

OMG, I returned from the most amazing, albeit short, work trip to Germany!! I was in Munich and Stuttgart for two days each. I'm so tired, but what fun it was to be 'back home' again. Weather was cold and rainy, but that's winter in southern Germany. I gave a 90-min briefing/impromptu discussion on Ebola in Munich. I was thinking and dreaming in German by the first night there (in Munich). I have video of the Glockenspiel for the kids/Dave to watch. I got to help lots of silly Americans and had a fair share of Dunklebier, Schnitzel, und Gurkensalat (but not much Spatzle, unfort., and no Apfelkorn!). I took the train to Stuttgart (so darn nice; why don't we have that here!? took video of the landscape too) for a one-day conference where I met some super cool folks at Kelly Barracks. Didn't sleep a wink on the flight home. Oh, I'm just so re-energized!!!
