Blog 411

This blog was created for our friends and family who don't get to see us -- well, Jonathan and Elise, really -- as often as they'd like. I'm trying to keep you all updated on their milestones and their day-to-day activities. I also hope this will serve as sort of a journal for them as well, something for them to read when they are older that chronologues their lives and adventures. When I can, I'll post pictures and maybe even videos to help bridge the distance.

This blog is Part 2 of the Life of the Hardwicks. This edition will focus on our new lives in Atlanta, GA, that began in July 2013.

2014_03_02 Sunday

First things first, this morning we woke up to a half marathon literally out our front door. By 9am, our whole street was swarming with runners. what a surprise!

Oh did we have a terrific, family adventure today! We went to the Consolidated Gold Mines in Dalonega, GA! How cool. We got to pan for gold, which was first discovered in Georgia before it was in California. The water was very cold, and apparently the panners mostly did their panning in the winter, when the crops didn't require their attention. And, I think we got about 3-4 flakes of gold in each of our 3 pans. A lot of work and patience for not much reward, I'd say.
Then we took a tour of the mine itself. Our tour guide was a kid named...J.D.! Jonathan got a huge kick out of him. We even saw a couple of tiny, brown bats that Elise thought were "so cute."
Then the kids panned for gemstones. The water was still cold, but it was so much easier and more rewarding scooping out the large gems. They each got a gallon bag of gems, to include an "ear stone" that popped out of each kid's ear. The guys there were terrific...if not a little hard to understand.

Then, we walked around the city square. It looked like a small German village layout with shops along the perimeter of the town square, where town hall was. We stopped in a fudge factory (of course) and a toy store that was celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday with his books and snacks (shish-kabob strawberries and marshmellows to look like the Cat's Hat). very cute.
After visiting a co-worker who happened to live in the general area, we shared a pizza and moozied on home, y'all. What a fun day!
