Jonathan was a satan child this morning. He woke up fine, but when it came time to eat breakfast, he fell apart and refused to eat. Have no idea what triggered it, but I'm suspecting that he's used to watching a little TV while he eats and we can't really do that now.
We have entered Phase I of the kitchen remodel!!! The dumpster has arrived and is taking up our entire driveway. The kitchen and the keeping room are totally cleaned out. Contractor disconnected gas and water. He started to pull apart the hutch to reassemble it in the dining room. I am expecting a delivery of building materials later today. Demo starts at 9am tomorrow!!!
From Elise's school:
Today we started learning about animals that live in the ocean. The OCTOPUS was first on our list. X told us that there is another animal like an octopus, but it's called a squid. X told us that an octopus has 8 legs, called tentacles. X shared a really cool fact - "If you cut off an octopus tentacle it will grow back, but if you cut off a people arm, it will never grow back." X was eager to use the spray bottle to paint the ocean for her octopus and did a great job. X thought we should move on to starfish. We wanted to find out how many legs starfish have, so we found a picture and counted - 5! X paid close attention in Chinese and was rewarded with the granting of his request - the bunny song. X made some clever constructions with the "bits and pieces", including a capital and lower case A for her name. Elise made a modern design with the math cubes, a set of stairs in a cool black and white pattern. X used some great manners to ask for more bread at lunch, starting with, "Excuse me please, Ms. Stacy..." I was impressed.
I made a killer rice, chicken, carrots/peas mix in the wok tonight. I got red (or maybe black) rice, so the chicken sort of turned red too, which made the meal that much more interesting. We are officially all paper and plastic (sorry, my green friends). I need to find lots of wok recipes; it was really easy to cook and clean up!
Blog 411
This blog was created for our friends and family who don't get to see us -- well, Jonathan and Elise, really -- as often as they'd like. I'm trying to keep you all updated on their milestones and their day-to-day activities. I also hope this will serve as sort of a journal for them as well, something for them to read when they are older that chronologues their lives and adventures. When I can, I'll post pictures and maybe even videos to help bridge the distance.
This blog is Part 2 of the Life of the Hardwicks. This edition will focus on our new lives in Atlanta, GA, that began in July 2013.

2014_03_30 Sunday
I took the kids to our favorite diner to find out that our favorite waiter was vacationing in Portugal. Mental note: tipping too much!
While we waited, Jonathan drew this picture:
While we waited, Jonathan drew this picture:
It is a gold mine (in the center) with a pulley system that has a bucket and ropes to deliver the gold to the car (currently left) that would follow the arrows to the "stop" sign to pick up their gold. There is also, unfortunately, an avalanche coming down the mountain, which is covered in cacti. That's why it's in Texas County. ??
I can only link this back to our excursion to the gold mine (3/2/2014). But, he drew this totally unprompted.
Then we bought him two new laundry hampers (the one from his birth had really served its purpose and was time to retire), and we got packing papers so I could pack the entire kitchen up.

2014_03_29 Saturday
I could not fall asleep last night. Might have been b/c I told J/E one could sleep in my bed with me at a time, and J jumped on that, while E picked a tent in her room.
We had quite an adventure today. We went to the ATL Science Festival Expo in the city. There were so many booths and events to participate in. It was really fun and overwhelming. It took forever to park and walk to the place, so we lost some time there. But, the kids checked out so many things and stopped by a ton of booths. It definitely would have been easier with Dave here since both kids weren't necessarily interested in the same things, and the booths weren't necessarily targeted to both ages. I picked up a bunch of brochures too for future personal and school use. I have pix on my camera, but they're not great.
Then we had to high-tail it across town (which didn't happen b/c the traffic was horrendous) so that Elise could make it to a classmate's birthday party at an art studio. We were late. She painted a bird. I had discussed with Jonathan that this was not an event for him and that we would come back separately to do it ourselves, and he packed a backpack of things, including snacks, to keep him busy, but when he saw the location, he basically imploded on me. (oh, that's fun) The birthday mom gave him a plate to paint (which probably didn't do much for my authority, but whatever); he was happy.
We got home, and I took an N-A-P while the kids dug through the bags of stuff from the Science Festival.

don't remember what this "goop" was, although you can make it at home, but if you stopped messing with it (as a solid) it became a liquid. |

From Elise's school:
Today was our last day of "growing and knowing". All of our seeds are planted and our beautiful pots are sitting on the windowsill. Now we wait. X and X completed our garden with their choices of daisies and morning glories. In circle time Elise taught us a new word when she described her visit to the PLANETARIUM. X already knew that planetariums teach you about outer space because he goes to the one at Fernbank. X led the calendar lesson and told us that it is almost April - her birthday month! She also explained that tomorrow is Saturday and that's good because on Saturday you don't have to do any work. In centers X and X mastered some advanced geometry ;) They explored angles and lines on the geo boards. X sat down at the letter center with a sigh and said, "I've been practicing my letters for years and years".

Jonathan was a Star Student this week: yeah! So, we walked over to his favorite restaurant, and shared the good news with our waiter. While there, I had a beer and gave it to Jonathan to color. He was very confused that I got one since "those are wine coasters."
David flew up to his mom's for the weekend to help with Bob's estate.

2014_03_27 Thursday
This week has been the Atlanta Science Festival. I didn't have my act together enough to attend other events, but I did take the kids to a college planetarium where we peeked at the sun with a machine, saw a huge telescope (but it was still too bright to look), learned about the solar system (the school had a mural at the entrance you could stand on your favorite planet and see its orbit to the sun; Elise kept slipping on Saturn), saw the moon on their birthdates (Jonathan's was a 1/4 waning moon; Elise was definitely a full moon), and watch a star show. They did a terrific job. It was from 6-8pm, so the kids had dinner first, and Jonathan even wore his PJs.
Jonathan got his mid-term grades. All As (3x 100!), except for a low B in science. boo. gotta get on that.
On a much more somber note, we lost Grandpa Bob today to Parkinson's. He was such a sweet, kind, gentle soul; he will be missed.

From Elise's school:
Today we reviewed and compared all the different and crazy ways that things grow. X wondered if our spinach leaves came from a tree, so we investigated. We found out that the leaves grow right out of the dirt. All the kids were very concerned with how spinach gets clean. As we discussed all the different patterns that bugs "wear', Elise pointed out that X and X both had stripes like bees (and tigers). X gave such quick, thoughtful, imaginative answers to everything today that I had to ask her why her brain was so fast. She attributed it to bacon for breakfast. X was the first one to solve our wheat thin equation at snack. He turned 4 small squares into 1 big square! X mastered paper tearing in art. He pinched with his hands close together and then moved his hands in opposite directions. X is learning a new letter sound game on the computer. She is going to be in charge of teaching it to her friends.

From Elise's school:
We began preparations for planting today! Our pots are beautifully painted and ready for decorations. X discovered that if you hold the flower pot from the inside, you can turn it without getting paint on your hands. X held her paintbrush with a perfect lobster grip! In circle time we reviewed some cool facts about frogs. X gave a lesson on camouflage and told us she would camouflage herself by dressing like carpet. X taught some friends who were not here on Friday about how frogs eat - complete with tongue flicking demo. X and X loved learning transportation words with the race car in Chinese. On the playground we set up a challenging obstacle course and cheered each friend on. X climbed the rock wall for the first time! Elise chose "Lady and the Tramp" for our story because she "loves rats!" Her favorite part of the story was "when the rat climbs in the baby's window".

From Elise's school:
We were already impressed with tadpoles turning into frogs, but today we learned that frogs flick their loooong tongues out to catch flies. So cool. Check out our long tongued frogs hanging on the wall. X put her mouth on upside down 'cause her frog is grumpy. X and Elise both had Spring bugs on their shirts today, so they told us all about them in circle time. X held a very still "criss cross" during circle so he got to go first with the # flash cards. He nailed it and gave me a powerful high five! X got to take the flash cards home for the weekend to see if his mom knows her numbers. Lucky for me, I already got quizzed - X built several towers and tested me on how many legos were used for each. He said I did a good job.

From Elise's school:
The "Rainbow Fish" inspired lots of creativity today. X placed scales carefully on his fish in art and learned a new word, "overlap". X and X swam hard as we used our arms and legs like fins. Everyone was out of breath after we kept our fins lifted and flapping for a count of 30! X searched through all the "bits and pieces" shapes until she found every line and curve to form her name. Elise led us in calendar. She gave some Spring facts and some commentary about the fact that Spring is supposed to be warm, but it is "kinda crummy outside".
After school, she went home with a girl friend for a nice playdate. She was so excited about it last night and this morning. And, it sounded like they had a great time.

2014_03_17 Monday
The kids wore all green today to school. What fun. Elise came home with a piece of gold that a leprechaun left for her (maybe in a treasure hunt?).
At dinner time, I was experimenting with cooking a steak with beer, and Jonathan strolled in and said: "gee, mom, the house smells like Opa's!" ha!!! spot on, little dude!

From Elise's school:
Everyone worked hard in centers this morning...X worked on her "lobster grip" while tracing all the hidden "W"s and "V"s on treasure island. X used the frog book to put all of the pieces in order for the life stages of a frog - after we figured out that the "big glob of clear eyeballs" was actually frog eggs. X copied the example of the flower sequencing cards perfectly, coloring each card and putting them in the correct order. X was having a hard time reaching the tangrams that she needed, but X thoughtfully came to the rescue since he is "so tall". In circle time we talked about St. Patrick's Day. X shared that a leprechaun came to her house when it was nighttime and messed everything up. We also read a book about moths and butterflies. Elise did a great job explaining the word "hibernate" to everyone. X fell in love with Biscuit the therapy dog, who came for a visit today. He helped everyone remember to be gentle and talked about how cute and sweet Biscuit was all during lunch.

From Elise's school:
We had more fun with bugs today! X thought it was really cool when the watercolors mixed together to form new colors on his butterfly wings. X put the bug parade in order in lots of different ways - small, smaller, smallest - long, longer, longest - etc. X and X got to practice walking to the water fountain and filling up their water cups all by themselves. They both did a great job and didn't spill a drop. X said that was because they walked like zombies. X loved creating an empty space in his magnet pattern by flipping a piece over to make it "float" on the pole. Elise practiced breaking the letters of her name into lines and picking up her marker between each one. During circle time X told us about the eiffel tower because she had things from Paris on her pants. I told everyone that I love Paris and that we should go there someday. X said no, we should go to Italy because they have pasta - everyone agreed.

From Elise's school:
We started the day on our newly spruced up playground. Thanks to everyone who worked so hard on Saturday. Back in centers X completed a very challenging horse puzzle so she got to name the horse. His name is Cinny. X helped X with the tangrams in such a thoughtful and gentle way. She used phrases like "that one is tricky" and "if I were you I'd try the triangle". X and X worked hard and matched all the upper case and lower case letters in the alphabet bugs. X and Elise enjoyed painting their butterfly wings - especially when X's dropper accidentally shot pink paint at me! In circle time X and X were both quick to tell us their mom's and dad's names. Anyone who could not remember is to interview you tonight for their "homework". X read a dinosaur book to us - there was A LOT of roaring!

Oh daylight savings really kicked us in the derriere this morning. Jonathan asked me why it was so dark as we walked to school; I thought it was pretty interesting that he even noticed. We also talked (ad nausium) about when to talk, and I offered to draw a stop sign on his hand if he needed another reminder (but tried to ease off the visual reminders so he just plain remembers for himself). So far, so good. It was down-right hot today; I had the doors open to air out the house for awhile (and Biggles even ventured out to explore the porch), and the kids played outside until about 5pm!! I think Spring has sprung! We even went back outside after dinner for a quick game of soccer and to water various plants, but especially the blooming daffodils.
2014_3_08 Saturday
Jonathan got another Super Star mark for this week!! I know he worked really hard to control that wild mouth of his. He even wore a red (STOP!) bracelet all week to remind himself that his mouth should be closed in class. So, to celebrate we went out for Chinese food. He really loves using chopsticks, so that even won out over his typical go-to place that is down the street. They are really nice at the Chinese place and have kiddy chopstick holders, so he really did eat with them and would have finished if we had A LOT more time. Elise got a kick out of the 'fancy spoon' and opted for that over the too-hard chot-icks. We were really proud of him this week; he really worked hard to figure out when it is/not appropriate to chatter.

From Elise's school:
Our bark rubbings were rained out but we created some beautiful cherry blossom paintings instead. X was very pleased with her artwork. She went on to greet each new activity with a big smile and a positive attitude. X and X cooperated so nicely to complete all the uppercase and lowercase matching blocks. When X found a match they were having trouble with, X complimented him with a hearty "That's what I'm talkin' about!" X made some creative drawings, including a friendly spider that talks and has a spike on his head. X created a pet shop with the magnets. Everything costs $17. Elise brought a book called "Ok, kids" and read it to the whole class. We also read "The Giving Tree" and discussed what we might ask for if we had own giving trees. X would ask for a wolf puppy! Awesome.
Mom and dad had a date night out. What fun!

From Elise's school:
We continued to talk about trees, plants, flowers and how they grow. After we put some picture cards in order from seed to bloom, we put our sequencing skills to the test. X presented his 4 part story of a pinata being hung. He ended with an avalanche of candy. X explained putting candles in a cake, cutting, serving and gobbling it up. Then we played a matching game based on our own associations. X matched some objects because they fly, some that are delicious and (his most popular match) things that are stinky. X made a group of objects that go in a house, but she was baffled when I called the TV a television. At lunchtime X taught everyone how to spell his last name. X chose an alphabet book for circle time and got us started by singing the ABCs to the class. She even led us in the days of the week. Elise contributed some great "T" words to our list: tiger, turtle and turfle, which she explained was another word for purple.
Elise had quite an adventure after school. A friend from Jonathan's bus stop came by to pick her up for a playdate. I don't know what those girls did, but Elise was conked out by the time the sitter brought her home. She had a terrific time there.

From Elise's school:
A new month and a new theme - growing! X loved doing a painting of roots with gooey noodles. X explained to everyone that roots go into the dirt and find water for trees. X and X exhibited great balance doing different variations of tree pose in yoga. X applied our lesson to everything she did today. She made flowers, trees and roots in magnets and white board. Then she chose spring books for the reading tent. During Chinese X and Elise participated excitedly and gave great answers. We played a cool, but kinda tricky counting game. I was already impressed when X put the correct number of sticks in bin 1 through 9 - then she did it backwards!

2014_03_02 Sunday
First things first, this morning we woke up to a half marathon literally out our front door. By 9am, our whole street was swarming with runners. what a surprise!
Oh did we have a terrific, family adventure today! We went to the Consolidated Gold Mines in Dalonega, GA! How cool. We got to pan for gold, which was first discovered in Georgia before it was in California. The water was very cold, and apparently the panners mostly did their panning in the winter, when the crops didn't require their attention. And, I think we got about 3-4 flakes of gold in each of our 3 pans. A lot of work and patience for not much reward, I'd say.
Then we took a tour of the mine itself. Our tour guide was a kid named...J.D.! Jonathan got a huge kick out of him. We even saw a couple of tiny, brown bats that Elise thought were "so cute."
Then the kids panned for gemstones. The water was still cold, but it was so much easier and more rewarding scooping out the large gems. They each got a gallon bag of gems, to include an "ear stone" that popped out of each kid's ear. The guys there were terrific...if not a little hard to understand.
check out this slideshow
Then, we walked around the city square. It looked like a small German village layout with shops along the perimeter of the town square, where town hall was. We stopped in a fudge factory (of course) and a toy store that was celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday with his books and snacks (shish-kabob strawberries and marshmellows to look like the Cat's Hat). very cute.
After visiting a co-worker who happened to live in the general area, we shared a pizza and moozied on home, y'all. What a fun day!
